Ecology offers $3 million to support stormwater projects of regional and statewide significance

On December 10th, Ecology released its list of lucky (and qualified) recipients of grants for stormwater projects of regional and statewide significance. Ecology received 28 proposals totaling more than $6.7 million. From this list, and with $3 million in funding to dole out, Ecology chose 15 projects to fund, totaling $2,980,831.

The projects funded are varied, and should move our region forward in a number of critical areas in stormwater management.

  • Two projects will provide new technical research, coordination, and review of emerging technologies to advance stormwater management (filling the void created when the TAPE process suffered budget cuts; and filling the need for a stormwater technology center).
  • Three projects will provide training for stormwater staff and homeowner associations in operations and maintenance of stormwater facilities.
  • One project will develop a tool to validate monitoring data for Phase I permittees including the Washington Department of Transportation, and for future widespread use.
  • Five projects will educate key audiences, such as businesses, in need of guidance and technical assistance.
  • Two projects will allow for the purchase of pricey stormwater maintenance equipment (high efficiency street sweepers) that will be shared among neighboring jurisdictions.
  • One project will provide a new construction field guide for Eastern Washington.
  • One project will develop a sizing tool for LID techniques in Western Washington, and expand the available precipitation time-series.

These projects should significantly help us improve how we manage stormwater, both in the Puget Sound region and throughout the state.
